World Language Learning Centre

Whether you are a Swiss resident or you are moving here from overseas, you’ll know that speaking another language means much more than just getting along in a different country or with different nationalities.

It can open so many other doors. That’s why, as well as teaching languages within our IB Curriculum, we provide classes at our World Language Centre to students, their families and the wider community.

Choose your language

Located on our campus in Etoy, the World Language Learning Centre gives children and adults the chance to enjoy an exciting and innovative range of Wednesday afternoon, after-school and evening classes in eleven languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Mandarin, Arabic, Russian and Danish.

Classes are available for children ages 6 and upwards. Our Summer Language in Action programme accepts children from the age of 4.

The benefits of learning with us

For children, the World Language Learning Centre is a great chance to add to the languages they learn at school, to improve their confidence in a mother-tongue language not taught in class-time, or to prepare for travel abroad. Acquiring an additional language through a fun, theatre-based approach will open up new opportunities and perspectives, helping them to develop personally, professionally and socially.

For adults, our World Language Learning Centre is the perfect opportunity to learn a new language for business or pleasure. And, for parents at GWAS, it’s a chance to make new friends within our school community.

Fun and efficient learning

Our approach to teaching focuses on active hands-on learning from day one. At all levels, the target language is used as much as possible.

All our teachers are native speakers with pedagogical qualifications and experience. Their aim is to give you the personal attention you need to help you progress swiftly in weekly classes lasting 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

We offer both individual classes and small teaching groups, with a maximum of ten students per class.

Internationally-recognised qualifications

Your studies at the World Language Learning Centre can lead to an optional qualification. We offer examinations from the some of the world’s most respected and well-recognised examination boards.

For English language studies, we offer Cambridge English examinations, which are highly-regarded by universities and employers internationally and may be accepted for visa and study purposes in countries such as Australia, the USA and Canada. We also offer London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts examinations in English Communication, which qualify holders for UCAS university entry points in the UK.

In addition, exams be taken in French (DELF/DALF), German (Goethe Zertifikat), Dutch (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) and Spanish (DELE).

Intensive and bespoke courses

As well as our regular lessons, we offer intensive language-themed courses and workshops throughout the year in French, Italian, Spanish, German and Mandarin.

We are also able to create bespoke courses for the business community to meet the specific needs of a particular company and its employees. These can be one-to-one courses or group classes, intense one-day workshops or regular weekly lessons. The format and content will be tailored to suit you.

Which level am I?

When you sign up for a course with us, you’ll need to know your current level in your chosen language. The best way to determine this is to use the Council of Europe language assessment grid.

If you would like to find out more about your language level expertise, try these online tests.

What were your results?
  • A1 = Beginner
  • A2/Lower B1 = Pre-Intermediate
  • Higher B1/B2 = Intermediate
  • C1/C2 = Advanced
