In the previous school of my daughters.... as a mother and a teacher, there was something missing for me. I say this for me because the girls were not unhappy there. I never heard them say “I don’t want to go to school.” But I never saw them passionate about learning either. And that bothered me. We once had this lovely family over at our chalet and I was amazed to hear them talk about their school with such enthusiasm and passion. I remember saying to my husband “this is what I miss with our girls.” We agreed to spend a day at Gems and at the end of the day Ella said “Mamma, can I change schools next week?” That was a sign, a big one. After that tryout day, I had a few interviews with the principal and staff and was blown away by their knowledge and enthusiasm. My main worry about Gems was having a 5-star facility and not having the 5-star staff to go with it. But I was wrong. The staff was, and still is, amazing. The girls come home excited, inspired by what they’re learning at school. They’re happy. They are curious. They are eager to learn. That is what was missing. And we are happy for them.

What was it that persuaded you to choose the school for your children?

I like the fact that the children learn, rather than being taught. It’s a subtle difference. For example, in a maths class, rather than looking at angles in a textbook they’ll go outside and take pictures of angles on buildings and houses. The IB programme is a fundamentally different way of learning that can be seen right the way through the school. I also like the fact that the children are encouraged to think out of the box, to discuss issues from a global perspective - which means they’re very prepared for a global life.

What do your children like about it?

They like that it’s international, the small classes, the different mix of kids and the discussions that happen in the classrooms.

What do you like about it?

The quality of teaching is fantastic. The teachers are very passionate and the children really get on with them and respect them. The spirit of the school is very important, too. There’s a real community spirit.

What’s the most important thing for you?
That my 3 children are very happy here.

What was it that persuaded you to choose the school for your children?

We chose GEMS because we knew that the school was still small which was perfect for our kids to learn the English language. The school building would be new, clean, professional and totally equipped with the newest technology. The teachers highly qualified with international experiences. The location was perfect (next to the office of my husband). The persons we spoke with were nice and friendly and we felt welcome.

What is it that you like about the school now?

My girls are more then happy to go to school and that is the most important thing I like about GEMS. I like the way of teaching (IB by professional teachers) and the quality of teaching.

What do your children like about it?

My girls like the way of learning. Not just learning from a book but learning by research, projects, creativity, computer(-apps) and self-experiences.

What was it that persuaded you to choose the school for your children?

Their successful day try-outs at GEMS, the excellent and caring staff we encountered and the fact that the pupils looked very happy. I was impressed by the high-tech and sporting facilities on offer at GEMS. Most importantly, my sons also liked the school.

What is it that you like about the school now?

…the strong sense of community, embracing parents, students and staff. The range of activities on offer to parents – e.g. exercise classes, social events, parent-run French and German conversation groups, access to the gym and swimming pool. The leadership team are receptive and listen to parental concerns.

What was it that persuaded you to choose the school for your children?

I loved hearing that the school takes one principle and applies it to other areas of learning so a child can see real world examples of how one can apply principles to every day life. Helps to understand.

What top 5 things do you look for in a school?

Good feedback from parents on quality of education and school environment being welcoming and a team effort in educating my children. I wish opportunities existed for parents to be involved in classrooms when kids have projects etc so we get a first hand view of teacher and classroom dynamics and engage the children and see how things are going while also helping. Having an opportunity to help and engage is important to me as I only hear what stories my children share.

Can you remember what prompted you to find out more information about the school?

It was already May by the time we found out about the school so it was urgent to enroll the children. The admissions team was very pleasant throughout the process.

What is it that you like about the school now?

The children love it, are eager to go to school in the morning, are learning at a quick pace. That is very important for parents. We like that the teachers are used to children arriving at different levels of proficiency and accommodate each child's learning capacities. The children feel well supported.

What do your children like about it?

The children like their teachers and friends. They like not having repetitive homework every night but projects. They like all of the activities that the school offers.

Can you remember what prompted you to find out more information about (the school)?

Moving to the Nyon-Geneva area, we wanted a school with students and staff with experience of multi-continent living (i.e. “a true international school”) but few offered PYP-MYP-IBDP. GEMS’ unique selling point was that it offered PYP and MYP as preparation for the DP and engagement with subject teachers was encouraged and made possible throughout the year, not restricted to five minutes at rapid-fire parent-teacher conferences.

What is it that you like about the school now?

Clear enjoyment by children of the learning environment, their subject content and the teachers. The breadth of teaching styles/ methods, use of media, active learning, field trips, guest speakers.

What do your children like about it?

The subjects being taught are of interest, the ways they demonstrate their knowledge seems to be enjoyable.

My child is truly being challenged to be the best she can be. The high standards have pushed her to achieve academically and I can see she is being stretched and taught to think critically and creatively. Through opportunities such as the World Scholar's Cup, Model United Nations, and service in the community, she is also gaining valuable skills and knowledge outside the classroom. The standard of teaching is truly excellent, and I am impressed by the quality of staff. Our teachers always seem to be featured in local newspapers, education magazines, and off training other IB teachers! The community at this school is the most welcoming and friendly I have ever experienced. The other parents are so welcoming; I feel at home when I walk into the school.

What was it that persuaded you to choose the school for your children?

Great teachers. They go the extra mile and beyond the call of duty….It’s a very supportive community, involving parents - and they do listen and act on what we tell them.

What do your children like about it?

It’s a very energising, dynamic learning environment. It’s full on in a good way - they can’t sit at the back of the class and do nothing! And they cater to individual children, the teaching is very much tailored to your child. They focus on the children, not the class as a whole. …There are very good relationships between the years, too. When I was at school, you rarely talked to children outside your class, but here they all have friends at different levels. It’s hard to communicate the richness going on in the school. It’s like a best kept secret. There’s a big focus on wellbeing, making sure the children are happy. Your child will be happy here. In a lot of schools, you have the chorus and the stars. In this school, everyone is the star.

I have never been so passionate for the subjects I am learning than since I attended GEMS. Some of my teachers have not only taught me a lot about the subjects but they have also taught me to see the beauty in them. I have never been so appreciative and fascinated by what I learned, and thanks to the great teachers at GEMS, I have now seen the joys and the beauty of learning.

After spending my whole education in the UK state system, coming to GEMS was an eye-opening experience. The IBDP is a program that invokes thought and personal opinion. I know that the skills I learn at GEMS, such as essay writing, thinking outside of the box and independent learning, will be applicable for the rest of my life. The teachers are very invested in everyone’s individual learning experience and genuinely care about getting the best possible results. […]

This school is great because since I have been here I have learned more and developed skills that I never thought I would be able to have. The sense of community in this school is so strong that even when I was new to the country they made me feel like I was welcome. DP here has been a great experience, thanks to the help from teachers and the community to complete all my requirements.

I have been in a lot of different schools before GEMS. I was in a private school, public school and a boarding school. The first impression that I had in GEMS was that all the teachers were really excellent and they were there to help you when you are struggling. They are really good and know what they are speaking about. We are always happy even if we are all tired. I have a really good impression of GEMS.

I transferred from a French speaking school and curriculum to a brand new system that was completely new to me. When I arrived I was amazed at how enthusiastic and fun the teachers are at GEMS. Especially the math teacher and my biology teacher who is so enthusiastic and creative that he turned a subject that I had no interest in, to a subject that I ended up taking at Higher Level in the DP.

I would like to go to University in the UK and study business. The university guidance counselor personally set me up with work experience that relates to the subject that I want to do, so that my personal statement can stand out and be a lot more attractive. I am able to work very hard and actually enjoy doing it instead of it being an obligation.

GEMS is a school where you can feel very comfortable. Everyone is so different but we get along so well, all the teachers are interested in your learning and they make you grow not only as a student but as a person. There are so many ways to get involved with school activities and to feel part of the school. The DP program is a great way to become a rounded human being and you create great bonds with your teachers and classmates. I am extremely happy I made the choice to come to GEMS, the teachers and coordinators are always willing to help and they go the extra mile to make your experience in school as good as possible.

Coming out of the Swiss public system, I was trying to pick out a school to go to. In hindsight, what made GEMS stand out above all the schools were the teachers. I had never before seen teachers who actually engage with students at such a high degree. I think that ALL teachers in this school are excellent educators.

My entire life I have struggled with math. When coming to the school, I thought that my experience would be the same. Thankfully it wasn’t. My math teacher is quite honestly the best teacher I have ever had. For the first time in my life, I have enjoyed and looked forward to math.

Connor B., Grade 5 student at GEMS World Academy Switzerland

Connor had a fantastic year with his teachers! Their care about his progress and their communication with us in this regard has been fantastic. Whenever there has been an issue, they are on top of it straight away and Connor genuinely feels that he can go to either of them with anything he needs to discuss. He is already talking about how much he is going to miss them, and as parents we will too.

We've been with the GEMS group both in Dubai and here, and can honestly say this year has been his very best ever.

My utmost thanks and sincere gratitude to the whole school for being such a nurturing environment.
