Admissions Process

GEMS World Academy Switzerland (GWAS) is currently enrolling in all grades.

At GWAS, we know school admissions processes can sometimes be longwinded and complicated. That’s why we’ve designed ours to be as simple, straightforward and informative as possible.

Ensuring they get the best start

The first step in the enrolment process is to offer you and your child a relaxed, informal interview. This can be done in person or by telephone. This helps us get to know you better and enables us to place your child in a grade that’s appropriate for their age and ability. And, of course, it also lets you get to know us!

As part of the process we will look at previous school reports and will ask your child to sit an age-related placement test. A benefit of our International Baccalaureate® programme is that it allows for a great degree of academic differentiation, so we don’t accelerate children into higher grades and only rarely retain children in a lower year group.

To make sure you’re applying for a place at the right Grade level, take a look at the country comparison chart below. Grades are given different names in different countries, for example, Year 2 in England is equivalent to Grade 1 at our school, although both programmes are for 6 year olds who turn 7 during the school year.

Once we have reviewed the documents and confirm that everything is in order, we will request an admission fee of CHF 3,500 from you to guarantee your place. This fee in non-refundable, but it is deducted from first year tuition fees only for children joining from another school in the Cantons of Vaud or Geneva.

Please note: every prospective student is admitted in line with the GEMS admission policy. A completed application submission does not guarantee your child a place at our school.

English Language Instruction and Support

English is the primary language of instruction at our school, with 3 levels of instruction (beginners, intermediate, mother tongue) throughout the school. French language classes start from age three. We also encourage all children to learn another language such as German or Spanish from Grade 6 upwards.

Special Education Needs - Specific Learning Differences

We support students of different individual levels and abilities. If you think your child has specific learning requirements, we would be happy to discuss them with you.

It was already May by the time we found out about the school so it was urgent to enrol the children. The admissions team was very pleasant throughout the process.

Whether you are a Swiss resident or you are moving here from overseas, you’ll know that speaking another language means much more than just getting along in a different country or with different nationalities.
